FlexStack

Overview
FlexStack is a full-function embedded computing platform that is small, battery powered and is ideal for both prototyping and production use. FlexStack empowers your company to jump-start the product development process, it’s modular design allows peripherals to be added simply by adding boards to the stack. FlexStack provides a hardware platform that easily migrates from prototype to production thanks to its small and flexible form factor that meets the needs of many small and low powered devices.

Applications
FlexStack is perfect for small, battery powered devices. Use FlexStack to prototype your product or design it directly into your system.

Typical applications include:

  • Handheld Electronic Devices
  • Medical Devices
  • Portable Data Logging Systems
  • Wireless Communication Devices
  • “Smart” Sensors – Autonomous Sensor Networks
  • Embedded OEM Applications
  • Battery Powered Devices
  • Ad Hoc Data Collection Networks
  • Robotic Systems (UAV, UUV, etc)
  • Mesh Networking

Small Size

A key advantage of FlexStack is its ultra-compact size, occupying only 2.5” x 2.5” (64mm x 64mm) of space. Each board in the stack adds less than ¾” (20mm) of height. A typical five board stack is less than 4” (100mm) tall.

Low Power
FlexStack can be powered by 4 AA batteries and run for hours or days, depending on your application. Battery charging and AC adapter capabilities are built in. Performance vs. power tradeoffs can be tuned through dynamic power management.

Rugged
The FlexStack can be used in high vibration environments, making it ideal for remote sensing and data collection applications. Its compact size makes it easy to package FlexStack inside watertight enclosures allowing it to be used in the harshest of environments.

Powerful Processor
At the core of the FlexStack is Analog Devices’ Blackfin® embedded processor. Blackfin embodies a new breed of 32-bit embedded processor with the industry's highest performance and power efficiency for applications where a convergence of capabilities – multi-format audio, video, voice and image processing; multi-mode baseband and packet processing; real-time security and control processing – are critical. Blackfin offers twice the performance and half the power of competing DSP’s.

Peripherals
FlexStack’s key advantage over competing embedded platforms is its wide range and rapidly growing set of peripheral modules. Any combination of modules can be assembled to create the perfect fit for your application.

Current and Planned Modules Include:

  • Power / Battery Charger
  • Low Speed Data Acquisition and Control
  • High Speed Data Acquisition and Control
  • Communications (includes RS-232, Ethernet, USB)
  • Bluetooth Wireless
  • Wireless Ethernet (802.11)
  • Zigbee Wireless
  • RFID
  • Experimental Breakout Module
  • MicroSD card
