Waltham, Mass. — The Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP), has appointed Boston Engineering CTO Mark Smithers to its Board of Directors. MassMEP is a collaborative center dedicated to helping Massachusetts manufacturers meet competitive challenges in an ever-changing economy.

“Mark brings an important perspective to MassMEP that is shaped by his experience helping clients commercialize their products and by also leading the development of Boston Engineering’s own technology,” said Katherine Mahoney, center director of MassMEP.

“MassMEP plays an important role driving Massachusetts growth by providing expertise across the entire manufacturing process,” said Mark Smithers, vice president and chief technology officer for Boston Engineering. “I look forward to supporting MassMEP’s important programs and its considerable economic impact through the Commonwealth.”

Mr. Smithers combines his product innovation and business experience to advance early-stage concepts into commercialized products for start-ups and global clients. This includes enhancing product viability and profitability for clients through design for manufacturing & assembly (DFM&A). In this role, Mark led the Boston Engineering Innovation Center, which MassDevelopment selected to support its Manufacturing Innovation Grants Program.

Additionally, he oversees Boston Engineering’s internal intellectual property (IP) development, which includes: unmanned underwater vehicles (AUVs and UUVs); maritime sensing and communications technology; and robotics.

Mr. Smithers has a long track record supporting Mass. manufacturing growth. He is a former chairman of the New England SEMI Group, a charter member of the MassTLC Robotics Cluster, a member of AUVSI New England, and the New England Innovation Alliance.
