The Back Story
To reach new market segments, a consumer products company needed to add technology features to its mainstay brand. The Fortune 500 company required a strategic partner with the design and engineering expertise to launch the new product quickly and maintain the brand’s core attributes. Importantly, the company needed to sell the product at an enticing price point and scale production quickly to reach consumers in this highly competitive market.
Boston Engineering served as the client’s trusted advisor throughout the product innovation lifecycle:
- Industrial Design: Created features that combine ease-of-use with the brand’s unique character. Boston Engineering collaborated with the company’s marketing team to ensure the product’s human factor and ergonomics fulfilled consumer requirements that were identified in market research.
- System-level Engineering: Innovated within an aggressive launch schedule using a development process that emphasized holistic product design, “stress testing” product elements to eliminate potential problems quickly, and expanding program management to ensure responsiveness and collaboration among all product development stakeholders.
- Manufacturing and Assembly: Designed a miniature electromechanical device compatible with fully automated, high-speed assembly equipment required for mass production. Also minimized the cost of materials and manufacturing.
Within seven months, Boston Engineering moved rapidly from initial concept to create a production-ready commercial product. The product launch was a success and the company is now scaling production to sell more than 150 million units annually. Boston Engineering is currently developing the company’s next-generation product with additional features. This also includes enhancing the manufacturing and assembly processes to support the product’s upcoming capabilities. For its efforts, Boston Engineering received the client’s distinguished leadership and innovation award for exemplary performance.
